Strategic Approach to Affordability

R. P. Keele, Affordable MANTECH Solutions, LLC, Brea, CA

In today’s competitive, results oriented global business environment, the age old battle between the technical community and the MBA, return on investment (ROI) driven management community has risen to a heightened level.  The Joint Military Services, as well as Corporate Management no longer fund research for research sake.  There must be a clear-cut application with business case showing timeline to benefit.  In order to obtain adequate research and development budgets the technical community must learn the strategy and language of business.    This strategy might include: trade studies with cost benefit analysis to show the ROI; risk analysis; communicating using technology readiness levels (TRL) and manufacturing readiness levels (MRL); technology roadmaps and timelines; marketing ideas and identifying a management champion.  Tools to implement this strategic approach require skilled personnel to stand in the gap between the customer, technical community and management.  When skilled personnel are not readily available internally, Affordable MANTECH Solutions, LLC provides the personnel, strategy and tools required to stand in the gap.

Key Words: Affordability, Technical Community
