A new technology is put forward to control weld stress and distortion of sheet component with trailing rotating extrusion. Via a columned metal pole with special head face, extrusion force with rotating action is applied to the metals of weld and the heat-affected zone when they are still hot after welding to stretch the longitudinal and transverse compressive strain in the weld that come into being during welding, and so reduce the residual stress and distortion. The equipment for weld with trailing rotating extrusion (WTRE) is simple and facile to make automation come true as well as has the advantage of low noise. This equipment has the ability to control the stress and distortion of both the straight weld and the circumferential weld. The results of equipment show that this technology can decrease the sheet component's weld residual stress greatly and reduce the residual distortion to below eight percent besides the surface of weld is even and smooth, which may reduce the stress concentration on the weld toe significantly. The weld metal treated with WTRE has compact metallurgical structure and its connection strength is enhanced to some extent.
