Quick Plastic Forming Technology

Quick Plastic Forming (QPF) has been developed as a high-volume, hot-blow-forming manufacturing process applicable to automotive products. Although the details of the process may appear to mirror many aspects of Superplastic Forming (SPF) processes, the fundamental philosophy differs from that of most previous SPF practitioners. Specifically, the QPF approach involves deforming aluminum sheet at rates sufficient to support production volumes of 10's of thousands per annum, regardless of whether the operative alloy deformation mechanisms are superplastic in nature. Shape capability may be mildly restricted by this approach, but has not prevented the manufacture of components which are much more complex than comparable automotive stampings. This talk will review elements of the Quick Plastic Forming manufacturing system and contrast the approach taken to that of suppliers to niche markets.
