Fatigue and Fracture Properties of Single-Melt Ti-6A1-4V Plate

P. Reid, Boeing Phantom Works, St. Louis, MO

As a part of the Metals Affordability Initiative Consortium program and other tasks, studies were conducted to compare the fatigue and fracture properties of Ti-6Al-4V plate from single melt ingot versus double vacuum arc refined (VAR) ingot. The single meld processes investigated were electron beam cold hearth melted (EBCHM) and plasma arc melted (PAM) ingots. A comparison of notched and unnotched fatigue crack initiation, fatigue crack growth, and fracture toughness is presented.
