Use of Rapid Manufacturing Methods in Fabricating Superplastic Forming Dies

F. S. Pitt, The Boeing Company, Seattle, WA

SPF ceramic dies require a casting model to pour the ceramic slurry against. Typical materials for making the casting model are aluminum and Richlite, a built-up wood product. The traditional materials require NC programs and machining to create the complex surfaces, and in turn, require a considerable amount of time and labor to create. Rapid Manufacturing methods have advanced in materials and size such that creating casting models from RM techniques is feasible. An example of using the Fused Deposition Modeling process to create casting models for a large, enclosed ceramic die is presented. Additional issues, cost and potential uses are discussed.
