It is well known that titanium absorbs oxygen during high temperature exposure in air, and that the elevated oxygen levels reduce ductility. Following Superplastic Forming, a certain amount of material is usually removed to eliminate the layer with elevated oxygen. Methods of removal vary, though chemical milling is the most popular. This paper investigates the removal of the surface layer in varying amounts via the faster chemical milling and slower chemical etch (“pickle”) methods and the effect on flexural properties of three titanium alloys. Surface roughness of typical specimens is compared to the flexural results.
