Differences in Alpha Case and Microhardness Profiles in Two Lots of Superplastic Formed Titanium 6Al-4V Alloy

F. S. Pitt, The Boeing Company, Seattle, WA

Grain size is known to affect certain properties of Titanium, including Superplastic properties and tensile strength. In this presentation, two lots of Titanium 6Al-4V are exposed to simulated Superplastic Forming conditions. Following the simulated exposure, microhardness profiles and visible alpha case depths are measured and compared. A mathematical model is proposed that describes the difference in oxygen diffusion due to grain size.
