Failure Analysis of Turbine Engine In-Flight Failure

L. R. Carney, NAVAIR Depot Jacksonville, Jacksonville, FL

A failed aircraft turbine engine was delivered to NAVAIR Depot Jacksonville for investigation of cause of failure. Disassembly and inspection revealed a number of damaged items including burner cans, bearing struts, turbine blades and several other associated components. The inspection and subsequent investigation focused on the first stage turbine blades. Failure was attributed to the stress rupture of an improperly manufactured component.
