Failure Analysis of Turbine Engine Compressor Disk and Associated Hardware.

L. R. Carney, NAVAIR Depot Jacksonville, Jacksonville, FL

A turbine engine failed while undergoing final test cell run prior to release for service. Disassembly and inspection revealed a number of damaged or fractured items including the high compressor front disk, its mounting hub, connecting pins and bearing housing. The cause of failure was attributed to fatigue of the titanium front compressor disk, however, the mechanism was induced by damage/distortion of other assembly components.
