Trade Studies on Aluminum Empennage Structure for Commercial Aircraft

E. G. Nichols, S. Mitchell, S. Russell, D. Mulieres, Vought Aircraft Industries, Dallas, TX

This paper presents the results of an investigation to develop low cost aluminum components for commercial empennage aerostructures. Analytical trade studies were conducted to evaluate the cost, weight and structural integrity performance of various structural arrangements and materials. Advanced aluminum alloys and product forms were investigated.
