Systematic Approach to Definition of New Alloys for Next Generation Aerospace Applications

G. D. Tuss, A. Warren, S. Axter, The Boeing Company, Seattle, WA

The reality of shortened lead times, performance improvements in products and materials as well as business complexity and globalization, and regulatory compliance are factors driving our materials decisions daily. A systematic approach was created at Boeing to address these areas of need as it relates to the development of new high-performance aluminum alloys for future aerospace applications. The application of this process has produced results on far more alloys, with greater detail knowledge, and in much shorter time than ever before at Boeing. Details of this more streamlined and efficient approach to cooperative alloy development and characterization will be presented.
