Rioja, Alcoa, Inc., Alcoa Center, Pennsylvania Description: During the last year non-metallic composite materials have made important gains in major aircraft applications such as fuselage and wings. Metallic materials also continue to show gains in performance and cost once advanced materials are incorporated to new designs and low cost manufacturing approaches. This is demonstrated mainly trough trade studies and large panel testing. This program reports of recent materials, design and manufacturing technology efforts aimed at reducing the weight and final cost of aerospace structures. Recent successes using new products are reviewed and case studies discussing cost/benefit analyses are presented. Benefits offered by different product forms such as extrusions, forgings and castings and improved joining technologies are reviewed. From the four sessions, it becomes clear that both reduced cost and improved performance are attainable with metallic solutions via the synergy created by the optimization of new products new design concepts and new manufacturing approaches jointly
