Summary: Direct Metal Deposition of Ti-6Al-4V is a process of great interest to the aerospace industry, with at least 10 processes being evaluated for both production and spares fabrication. The existence of an industry-wide specification that incorporates all requirements needed for aerospace components will be of great help in implementing this process. Using process evaluation work performed under the Metals Affordability Initiative, a revision to the original specification, AMS 4999, has been proposed. These proposed changes and the rationale for them are discussed.
