Summary: Metal based multifunctional materials are a unique class of engineered structures offering design flexibility and superior performance. The periodic cellular materials, a class materials manufactured by CMI, are among the most recent family of multifunctional materials attracting attention in many critical military and industrial applications. High stiffness to weight ratio, high surface area to weight ratio, high strength to weight ratio, and low weight to volume ratio are significant characteristics exhibited by these materials besides others. The ability to manufacture these engineered materials from any base metals/alloys commercially available in the form of strip, plate, wire, rod, tube allows tremendous design flexibility and material substitutions for any design envelope.
A discussion on Microtruss™ based periodic cellular materials and their effectiveness in impact energy absorption, thermal management, and catalytic substrate application will be discussed
