Reduction of Residual Stress In Aluminum Forgings

M. Timko, Weber Metals, Paramount, CA

Using  Design of Experimental Techniques, the ability to reduce residual stress in aluminum open die (hand) and closed die forgings will be discussed.  Several processing techniques were identified which influence residual stress.  These will be discussed as they relate to x-ray diffraction, strain gage, and actual machining performance for feedback on the experiment's results.
