Discoloration of Titanium

R. Briggs, The Boeing Company, Everett, WA

This presentation examines the color of titanium resulting from elevated temperature exposure. The goal of this project was to re-establish a visual standard for the definitions of discoloration used in the various process specification for titanium i.e. straw, light straw, dark straw, purple, violet and blue.  The influence of the initial surface condition on discoloration was documented and the results of bend test on Ti 6-4 sheet with various degrees of discoloration will also be presented.
