The paper shows the development of the electron beam technology within recent years with focus on the requirements of the aviation industry.

CNC controlled manipulators, sophisticated, back-scattered electron based electron optical monitoring systems and advanced seam tracking systems deliver precise welding results.

In addition automatic beam alignment and setup monitoring enable reproducible EB generator setup parameter as basis for a constant, high and reproducible welding quality.

Electron beam welding technology has the potential for automation of complex manufacturing procedures in order to increase efficiency, quality and costs. An example is presented for welding of a major engine component.
