ASM International has been serving the materials community for over 100 years and 2013 marks its Centennial Celebration. The organization has evolved from the Steel Treaters Club, a locally formed group of artisans and business owners in the Detroit area, to what today is the world’s largest Materials Society with more than 32,000 members located in over 100 countries around the world. The association was born out of the need to increase the production rate of aircraft engines, trucks, and automobiles to supply the war demands of WWI. The need to share knowledge, exchange information, and avoid duplication of efforts was essential then. It is still essential today and why events such as AeroMat continue to address a need to improve technology and advance the aerospace industry. This talk will cover ASM’s history, the impact of material advancements along the way, and how it helped advance the aerospace industry, especially through the influence of its members.
