Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing process induces changes in the base plate material and generates unwanted stress and deformation due to heat input. These stresses remain in the base plate material after the deposition and result in an unwanted distortion. The paper describes the subsequent effect of distortion during the removal of the base plate and the effect on the machining of Wire and Arc Additive Manufactured parts. A mild steel wire consumable electrode with the diameter of 0.8mm was used with a Fronius CMT welding machine integrated with ABB robot. A systematic study showed that removing the base plate can have a significant effect on the stresses induced into the deposited wall and this also alters the physical geometries of the wall structure, and the effects on the machining of thin walls can be desirable. It was discovered that it is of great importance to remove the base plate prior to machining in order to have a less desirable effect on wall straightness.
