As part of the Research and Development Program on Metallic Materials, EMBRAER developed a Fuselage Technology Demonstrator based on ERJ-145 Central Fuselage I, which was redesigned for new technologies: Friction Stir Welding (FSW), Fiber-Metal Laminate (FML) and Adhesive Bonding (AB).
The demonstrator is a 3 m long and 2.2 m diameter fuselage cylindrical segment, with typical semi-monocoque structure consisting of a thin external skin, reinforced by longitudinal stringers and circular frames, and special reinforcements at passenger door surround and at windows cut-outs.
The new processes were applied to different primary structure components in the demonstrator as skin, stringers, frames and others.
Static and fatigue tests were successfully performed at EMBRAER facilities, providing important subsidies for design and certification of future products with weight, manufacture costs and operational costs reduction.
