Coatings are often used to enhance metal forming processes. Various types may be employed to enhance lubrication, minimize scale formation and provide thermal insulation of the workpiece. For example, glass-based coatings are being used in ring rolling as a means to prevent tears and cracks with crack-sensitive metals such as waspalloy and nickel-based alloys. This is achieved by a coating that acts as a thermal blanket and maintains part temperature for a longer period of time. This paper will review the different coating types and the benefits realized when hot forming titanium, nickels and high temperature alloys.
