Magnesium alloys are increasingly being used in the automotive and electronics industries for weight reduction and structural efficiency. However, the applications of magnesium alloys in aerospace industry have been hindered by their limited mechanical properties especially at elevated temperatures. This talk presents the development of new magnesium alloys using computational thermodynamics and the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) approach coupled with critical experimental validation. Several examples of Mg-Al-RE, Mg-Al-Ca and Mg-Zn-RE systems will be discussed for potential aerospace applications.
