High performance aluminum-based products continue to offer value for major aircraft manufacturers by providing lighter structural components and thereby increasing fuel efficiency.  Better damage tolerance and improved corrosion resistance may also provide increased inspection intervals and lower maintenance costs.  A new generation of thick aluminum alloy products has been developed by Arconic, specifically targeted at internal structural components such as ribs, spars, thick frames, landing gear components, etc.  The development of 2070 is nearing completion for both plate and forgings. This 3rd generation Al-Li alloy was developed as a low density silver-free product with attractive mechanical properties and best-in-class stress corrosion cracking resistance. An update on the development of alloy 2070 will be provided for both plate and forgings.
