The Center for Advanced Non-Ferrous Structural is a joint NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center between Iowa State University and the Colorado School of Mines. Pre-competitive projects are proposed, selected, and mentored by an industrial advisory board. Over the past 5 years, the center has made several breakthroughs in the general area of non-ferrous structural alloys, with particular advancements being made in aerospace alloys including titanium, aluminum, and nickel-based superalloys. Some of these advancements will be presented, including strategies to accelerate the understanding of oxidation of titanium alloys, the influence of composition and thermal history on both microstructure and properties of titanium alloys, and new techniques to fully characterize ultrafine grained materials. The Center is poised to continue to make significant progress over the next 5 years on a wide range of topics of interest to industry.
