“Black” titanium materials offer an interesting combination of low weight and increased wear resistance. These alloys use a zirconium component to create a black, wear resistant oxide when oxidized. While these materials have historically had lower strengths, improvements to the alloy composition have increased their strength and performance. Alloy composition and mechanical behavior will be discussed.
