Hot Stretch Forming, better known as HSF, is a high temperature CNC forming process that precisely contours titanium shaped bar or extrusions in long lengths for air frame components. This forming technology was developed in the years 2005-2008 by The Cyril Bath Company to meet the needs of Boeing's 787 airplane build. Currently, Cyril Bath's markets these titanium components under the brand name ARIES Manufacturing. The HSF forming process utilizes a custom software control system to precisely heat, form, and slow cool the work piece in a repeatable process that minimizes residual stress. This innovative titanium forming process has been validated by the supply of over 20,000 part pieces currently installed in various commercial aircraft. Titanium is the material of choice in many airframe applications, but primarily in those newer airplane designs that utilize carbon fiber/reinforced plastic for the fuselage or wing panels. A detailed description of the HSF forming process will be presented, along with examples of various part types discussing sizes, lengths, and contour specifics. Finally, there will be presentations documenting buy weight and overall cost savings of the HSF forming process.
