Experiences will be shared on residual stress related phenomena in the production of Al7050 open and close die forgings, including examples of warpage during quenching, as well as canning and distortion phenomena after machining. Possible reasons on how residual stress is introduced will be discussed, along with methods to alleviate high stress in practice. Simulation efforts on quenching, stress relieve and machining processes will be addressed and examples will be given on this topic. Experimental measurement of residual stresses using hole-drilling and other non-destructive and destructive methods will be introduced as well from Weber Metals’ own experience.
