Gears feature distinct geometries and are subject to unique mechanical stresses and operating environments relative to other classical machine elements. Accordingly, gears require special hardening procedures and specifications. Induction hardening is a preferred heat treatment option for gears because of the quality, efficiency, and production advantages it can provide. This presentation addresses the induction hardening of a variety of different gear types (e.g. spur gears, helical gears, bevel and hypoid gears, etc.) and will introduce a number of different approaches and corresponding equipment types. Computer simulation will be used throughout to provide quantitative illustrations of induction gear hardening capabilities.
