TIMETAL® 407 [Ti-407: Ti-0.85Al-3.9V-0.25Fe-0.25Si] is a new alpha-beta titanium alloy developed at Titanium Metals Corporation (TIMET) that provides improved formability and machinability over Ti-6Al-4V, while excelling in applications where high energy absorption or impact resistance is critical. TIMET has produced ingots for a variety of product forms and applications. Production billet, bar, and wire have been produced showing moderate strength levels and higher ductility compared to Ti-6Al-4V. An additional benefit of Ti-407 is a lower forming temperature and decreased tool wear life compared to Ti-6Al-4V. Ti-407 can be a replacement in applications that do not require the high strength of Ti-6Al-4V, but no other suitable titanium replacement is available. Cold formed strip product has been produced on the production scale and exhibits improved properties over Ti-3Al-2.5V strip product. Utilizing the benefit of improved machinability and lower temperature processing compared to the competitive alloys (Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-3Al-2.5V), cost reduction can be achieved in downstream processing.
