Thermal spray technology is used widely for applying metal and ceramic coatings to enhance the durability and performance of aircraft engines and power gas turbines. Since its inception almost 25 years ago, thermal spray processing using suspension feedstocks has produced new technological, manufacturing and product opportunities. Suspension spray has been incorporated across the suite of thermal spray modalities and has produced novel coatings from ceramics, metals and cermets. It has unique advantages for rapid research development yet also scales well into manufacturing. This talk will describe opportunities and challenges in developing and applying suspension thermal spray coatings for industrial applications.
