Within the past years the requirements regarding new aircraft generations have changed. The focus is shifting from developing materials with further improved performance more towards cost effective and sustainable solutions allowing at the same time higher production rates. Therefore recycling friendly and energy efficient materials are considered. Taking these boundary conditions into account aluminum alloys offer many opportunities to stay in the future the material of choice in the aircraft industry. In this paper new developments at Novelis for aerospace plate and sheet products are presented to demonstrate how these challenges are being addressed.
