The aviation industry is facing increasing pressure to address its impact on climate change. In addition to light-weight airframes and deployment of sustainable aviation fuels, hydrogen combustion and hybrid-electrical power generated through hydrogen fuel cells is being strongly considered to reach targeted improvements in carbon emissions. Storage and use of liquid hydrogen in commercial aircraft presents new challenges for the engineering community. The panel will consist of a moderator and 5-7 expert panelists across Aerospace and Space organizations, who will give their insights into opportunities and related risks to transfer Material & Processes solutions from the Space sector into Aviation. Requirements for operation under harsh conditions are providing massive technical challenges in terms of mechanical performance, related technical specifications and the associated verification & validation scheme. A stable and competitive supply chain and industrial system must be established under demanding export control regulations. The panel discussion will cover lessons learnt and give recommendations for a common way forward.
