As the global industry strives to become carbon neutral, the production of Aerospace grade aluminum faces challenges. The lack of availability of primary aluminum from CO2-neutral sources and the availability of alloying elements are creating economic and political pressures.

“Science of Recycling Alloys” is one approach to counter. This concept includes strategies such as broadening compositional windows, adapting alloy compositions to common pre- and/or post-consumer scrap compositions and venture into uni-alloy concepts. At AMAG these efforts are supported by one of Europe’s largest aluminum recycling facilities. Decade-long experience and continuous development have led to unique scrap sorting abilities.

This contribution discusses the concept of “Science of Recycling Alloys” and how we have implemented it to supply the Aerospace industry with products with low CO2 footprint.
