Abstract: Advances in Titanium (Ti) and Titanium Alloy Miniature Tubing Fabrication and Applications.

Titanium (Ti) and its alloys are increasingly utilized in miniature tubing due to their exceptional combination of high specific strength, high temperature strength, and corrosion resistance. These properties are critical in aerospace where weight reduction and durability in extreme environments are paramount. These attributes position Ti based miniature tubing as a key enabler for next-generation micro-tube heat exchangers.

Fabricating Ti based miniature tubing presents significant challenges, including rapid embrittlement during cold working and a susceptibility to form oxide layers. Furthermore, Ti and its alloys are inherently expensive and current seamless tube fabrication processes often result in substantial material loss, driving up cost. K-Tube Technologies (K-Tube), conversely, takes flat strip and forms the material into tube, where it is laser welded. The laser welding process can be performed on tubing with outer diameters (OD) that are sub-0.050” and with wall thicknesses as low as 0.002”. By welding tubing that is near final dimensions, K-Tube can design a reduction process to engineer specific mechanical properties, such as tensile strength or surface finish, without costly intermediate unit operations. This novel approach to tube fabrication minimizes material waste and streamlines production, enabling precise control over tubing properties while reducing the cost of traditional seamless methods.

Advances in processing strategies have the potential to significantly reduce costs and lead times, enabling broader adoption in next-generation engineering systems. Continued evolution in manufacturing and fabrication methods could drive costs low enough to enable engineers to apply these materials creatively and without constraint, unlocking new possibilities for innovative designs. K-Tube Technologies welcomes technical partners who aspire to lead in applying this innovative technology to shape the future of Ti and Ti alloy miniature tubing.
