A Novel Self-priming Coating for Corrosion Protection

W. J. Van Ooij, A. Seth, T. Mugada, G. Pan, D. Schaefer, University of Cincinnnati, Cincinnati, OH

A novel coating concept for corroson control of metals is introduced and discussed. The coatings are mixtures of organofunctional silanes, water-dispersed resins, such as polyurethanes, nanoparticles and other additives, including inhibitors and surfactants. The systems are VOC-free and chromate-free. They do not require a conversion coating on the metal substrate and provide very good adhesion and corrosion protection. Metals that have been successfuly treated are cold-rolled steel, galvanized steel and aluminum alloys. Examples will be presented and discussed.

Summary: A novel coating concept is introduced that is based on the use of mixtures of organosilanes and water-dispersed organic resins. Examples of outstanding corrosion protection obtained on steels and aluminum are given.
