This paper concentrates on the formation of a thick Ni based coating on a steel substrate by coaxial laser cladding using a Nd:YAG 2 kW continuous laser beam. The theoretical analysis was focused on the transfer of laser irradiation into the substrate and powder particles with a simple model of heat transfer to the substrate. A gradual change of one processing parameter, like laser power, was used for an appropriate experimental analysis of the main process parameters window. Correlations between these parameters and geometrical characteristics of an individual laser track were found. The stress state of laser deposited coatings was investigated using the sin2Ψ X-ray method.
Summary: The formation of thick Co-alloy base coating by side laser cladding process on a steel substrate was studied and the analysis of internal residual stress distribution was performed using the sin2y X-ray method.
