Role of Coatings Technology in Industrial Gas Turbines

R. Subramanian, Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation, Orlando, FL

Dr. Ramesh Subramanian is the Group Leader for Coatings Technology and Development at Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation of Orlando, Florida. He joined Siemens in 2002 and became the principle investigator on advanced thermal barrier coatings development for the turbine hot section components.

Prior to his work at Siemens, Subramanian was with the Metals and Ceramics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. There he designed and conducted experiments to implement intermetallic aluminides as a binding agent in WC and TiC abased cutting tools. He also developed unique interface coatings for metallurgical bonding of AL and steel during the casting-in process.

Subramanian received a B.Tech. in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, India. His Ph.D. is in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Cornell University was the site of his post-doctoral work.

In 2001, the Siemens Inventor of the Year award was presented to Subramanian for his work in advanced thermal barrier coatings. Subramanian has authored numerous journal articles. He holds ten patents in the area of advanced thermal barrier coatings and is an active member of the American Ceramic Society and the ASM Thermal Spray Society.
