Summary: Patterns of distortion and residual stress distribution in different steel cylinders quenched by typical quenchants have been identified from systematic tests performed for many years since the 1920s. These experimental results were used to evaluate numerical models developed by pioneers of the heat treatment simulation in the 1970s and 1980s. However almost of their studies were to make a simple comparison between simulated and measured results although the identified patterns suggest an important meaning. In this research, an origin of distortion and residual stress distribution patterns in quenched chromium steel cylinders were explained clearly using mainly simulated stress and strain distribution changes.
