Saving Energy and Operating Costs with Flux Concentrators

T. Learman, Alpha 1 Induction Service Center, Columbus, OH

The purpose of this paper is to show the benefits of using magnetic flux field concentrators on your induction heating load coils. Using concentrators will improve the efficiency of the coil providing a variety of benefits to the user. Benefits include, reducing energy costs and cycle times while increasing profits and productivity.

Using concentrators will increase the size range of parts the induction coil can effectively heat. This will allow fewer coil changes and with less chances that the work coil will be damaged during handling or improper installation due to lack of water flow or bad buss connection. Using formable concentrator we have seen improved operational life, in one case over 500,000 cycles vs 50,000 cycles using machinable concentrator. This allows a savings in coil repair costs as well as the initial savings on installation costs.

Summary: We intend to show how to save energy and operating costs, in induction heating applications, using formable magnetic flux field concentrator. We intend to show examples from recent field installations.
