NIR Analyzer Provides Accurate In-Process Analysis of Ammonia in Nitriding/Nitrocarburizing Processes

K. M. Winter, PROCESS-ELECTRONIC GmbH, Heiningen, Germany; D. Koshel, Nitrex Metal / Process-Electronic, St. Laurent, QC, Canada

In gaseous nitriding, control of the dissociation rate or nitriding potential is key to a reliable process. If gases other than ammonia or dissociated ammonia are used, measured parameters deviate from expected values because they are no longer a measure of non-dissociated ammonia.

At the moment, instrumentation to measure the amount of ammonia is costly and not very practical. An innovative NIR analyzer designed to provide highly sensitive and accurate readings of process gas is now available. This new NIR analyzer is less expensive than complex analyzers but just as effective. In this paper, we will provide detailed information about the development work behind this new NIR analyzer and its practical benefits for the metal processing industry.
