For proper carburizing treatments, the carbon potential of the furnace atmosphere should be accurately measured and verified. However, a single measurement is not sufficient to get a truly reliable reading. Beyond atmosphere control devices such as probes and analyzers, carbon analysis methods like shim stock are necessary to validate measurement data, but less than pristine handling of the shims will cause false readings of the carbon. In this paper, we will present a new, non-destructive testing tool that quickly and accurately verifies the carbon content of carburizing atmospheres regardless of shim handling and its surface condition. The new approach is based on the effect that carbon changes the magnetic properties.
