The Contribution of Dr. George E. Totten to Unitize World Heat Treatment R & D and Up Date State of the Quenching and Control of Distortion

K. Funatani, IMST Inst. Consultant., Nagoya, Japan

In this presentation the contribution of Dr. G. E. Totten and overview of the history of quenching technology for the control of heat treatment are summarized.

The first conference on “Quenching and Control of Distortion” was held in Chicago and acknowledged the importance of quenching technologies. Afterward, in every few or several years the series of conferences were held in various countries to connect and exchange valuable information on quenching. In many sectors related with this series of conferences Dr. George E. Totten played the most important role to collect people and information from all over the world through his energetic activities over the boarder.

Now the conference is hosted by IFHTSE that was leaded by him during his presidency at the Federation.

As the world trends and interest on distortion control is becoming more important and that is combined with up date High pressure Gas cooling. However, the history of cooling research in most of the countries are new and suggesting the importance of fundamental data and research based on transformation and cooling phenomena that changes quite intensively during each stage of cooling even with the gas cooling.

The establishment of distortion control technologies needs historical and fundamental understanding of the cooling processes like as accumulated for more than 40 year in Japan via the various modification and improvement of the quench oils.

Summary: Starting from his activities on "Conference on Quenching and Control of Distorion" not only on the States but also in the Internationl conferences in this category is widened and collaborative activity with IFHTSE made a great advances. Even the up date Vacuum or reduced pressure carburizing exchange of information in the world scale become a daily actio and made contribution to the heat treatment field beyond the boarder. However, we have various fundamental problems to advance heat treatment and surface engineering technology to advace to the level that can sutisfy customer needs. We have to improve our comunication between various countries to advance sustainable heat treatment and surface engineering technology to bult the more environmentaly friendly and highly efficient processing tehcnologies. Discussion will be proposed on typical examples on state of HTSE tehcnologies.
