Vacuum Carburizing Methods, Equipment and Measurement Techniques

R. P. Poor, Surface Combustion, Inc., Maumee, OH

Many customers have been doing vacuum carburizing for decades in the United States as well as in Europe, Japan, Asia, and other parts of the world. From their perspective, it is a very much developed technology. On the other hand, the vast majority of people doing heat treating or even atmosphere carburizing are very much inexperienced with vacuum carburizing.

For these, a new technology in the hydrocarbons used to put carbon into the parts as well as designs intended to minimize or eliminate past maintenance related problems such as carbon drop out of heating system short circuiting issues. Developments incorporating several sensors for determining the vacuum carburizing atmosphere will be discussed.

This presentation will touch on metallurgical and process cycles, as well as equipment designed to demonstrate the conditions of a vacuum carburizing atmosphere.
