In this paper a relatively brief overview of George Totten's life spanning from his birth, family life, secondary education, military service and university training will be provided. Also to be included is an overview of his work with Union Carbide Corporation, formation of his own company and current academic collaborations around the world. In addition, a brief summary of his service on the inaugural Board membership upon the formation of the ASM Heat Treating Society and his longtime service, including presidency, of the International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering. Over Dr. Totten's career he has made many deep and personal friends in the global heat treating industry. A partial summary of his collaborative research, particularly focused on his international collaborations will be provided. The conclusion of this paper will detail his past and current associations with the University of Sao Paulo in São Carlos and the Associação Instituto Internacional de Ciência, São Carlos,SP, Brazil.
