Development of technology and equipment for heat treating of heavy-walled drill tubes requires solution of several interrelated tasks: - Selection of proper types of steel with high hardenability and mechanical properties - Experimental study of optimal treatment conditions (times and temperatures for austenization and tempering, quenching time and intensity) for different selected steels - Accurate computer simulation of the whole heat treating process for optimal design of installation for treating tubes with uniform temperature distribution and minimum installation length - Development of quenching chambers with controlled cooling intensity (heat transfer coefficient up to 10000 w/m^2 K) - Development of hierarchic control system for stabilization and control of main technological parameters: coil voltage, temperatures, quenchant flow rate, pressure and temperature. Presentation contains discussion of all these tasks and description of industrial installation for heat treating tubes with diameters 89 - 203 mm and wall thickness up to 65 mm; production rate is up to 3 t/hr
