Comparison of tribological behaviors under high torque (up to 600 lb-inch) will be presented for four high ratio gear pairs having a unique conformal tooth profile. Due to the low pitch angle, avoidance of pitting due to contact sliding friction was considered paramount in designing the core materials, heat-treatments, surface modifications, and lubricant systems. The results of these choices will be described.
Summary: Comparison of tribological behaviors under high torque (up to 600 lb-inch) will be presented for four high-ratio gear pairs having a unique conformal tooth profile. With a low pitch angle, avoidance of pitting due to contact sliding friction was considered paramount in designing the material systems for testing. Aerospace steel alloys, specialized heat-treatments, shallow surface modifications, and state-of-the-art lubricants were utilized. The results of these choices will be described.
