Development of a Simulation Tool for Prediction and Optimization on Carburizing Processes

G. Wang, M. Maniruzzaman, R. D. Sisson, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA

A numerical simulation software, CHTE CarbTool, has been developed for carburization processes based on the thermodynamics and kinetics of the carburization process. The software has a 1D mass diffusion model which is capable of simulating the semi-infinite and cylindrical geometry, including thin wall. Also an inverse method has been involved to optimize the process parameters based on the desired surface carbon and case depth. A steel -8620 is investigated by using DANTE/ABAQUS FEM software with the optimized carburizing process parameters.
