Salt Bath Heat Treating of Aluminum Aerospace Components

G. Monti, Bodycote Thermal Processing, Westminster, CA; S. Jones, Bodycote Thermal Processing, Rancho Dominguez, CA

Certain wrought Aluminum aerospace components benefit from being solution treated and/or aged in molten salt baths instead of air atmosphere furnaces. Salt baths can provide tighter temperature uniformity, reduce high temperature surface oxidation, shorten heat up times and reduce distortion during heating and soaking. The salt composition must be compatible with the alloys being processed and the component configurations must be such as to minimize salt entrapment during solution treatment and quenching.
