Breakthrough In Nitriding Austenitic Stainless Steels

J. Kalucki, Nitrex Metal Inc., Montreal, QC, Canada

In this paper we discuss a recent breakthrough in gas nitriding technology that can ensure nitriding of austenitic stainless steel at very low temperatures to impede the formation of Chromium Nitrides.  This important advancement enables imparting high wear resistance on austenitic stainless steel while eliminating the corresponding loss of corrosion resistance and still benefiting from the high productivity rates typical of gas nitriding.  Several applications of this specially modified low-temperature controlled nitriding/carburizing will be presented.
