Tooth x Tooth Induction Gear Hardening

G. Welch, Ajax Tocco Magnethermic Corp., Warren, OH

Recent demands for large gears required for mining and windmill industries has sparked an old technology to a new level.  Tooth by Tooth hardening allows a small induction power supply to heat treat large gears heating one tooth at a time. A single machine can provide the flexibility to process a variety gears including internal or external spur and helical gears of various diameters, face widths and diametral pitches. The process can utilize basic manually indexed equipment or state of the art tracking and automated indexing systems.

This paper will discuss basic inductor design, various types of gears suitable for this process, advantages and examples.
